New School Anxiety

Q: I’m excited to start a new school year, yet I can’t help but feel very nervous for the change. What can I do to reduce my anxiety?

A: Starting a new school year can bring on a rollercoaster of different emotions. The most important thing to realize is that it’s highly likely everyone is going through the same set of feelings. Change can be tough on just about anybody. Just take a step back, and look at all the positive things that come about from a new school year. It’s a chance to start fresh, meet new friends, try new activities, and accomplish any goals you have set for yourself.

Many new opportunities come with the start of the school year. It is a chance to do the things that you may not have accomplished last year. In addition, it’s an occasion to start over again. There is nothing holding you back, and all worries, bad grades, etc. can remain in the past. Likewise, you can use the new school year as an invitation to set new goals for yourself. Maybe you got bad grades last year, and then you can start fresh with a clean slate and vow to try harder in school this year. Starting a new school year is also an opportunity to make new friends. A great way to meet new people is to continuously try new activities and clubs. Don’t be afraid to sign up for a club just because none of your friends are doing it. It’s a way to meet people with similar interests!

If anxiety continues to persist then it may be a good idea to talk to a counselor. Talking about your feelings and emotions can help to relieve a lot of stress, especially since you are not the only one feeling this way.  The anxiety that comes with starting a new school year can generally be eased within the first semester as you get more familiar with the new surroundings.
