On April 14th, CB South was lucky to have Holocaust survivor Michael Fyrd share his story with the students. Fyrd is a member of the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education center who has begun to voice his experience with students across the country.
He was born in Poland in 1936 and later forced into a Jewish ghetto as the Nazis took control of his area. Fyrd recalled tales of his mother risking her life and smuggling items, specifically books for him to read. He emphasized the importance of books in his life, reasoning that they kept his imagination and morale alive. Fryd also talked about what it was like seeking refuge in farms and other countries, including America.
Since the Holocaust, Fyrd has become the writer he dreamed of becoming. His book, My Mother’s War: A Holocaust Survivor’s Tribute to an Extraordinary Woman, gives more detail regarding his story and mother.
CB South greatly appreciates Micheal Fyrd for his time and willingness to share his story. Fyrd is one the last Holocaust survivors left, for only the other children from his time remain. It is imperative that students and guardians like read his book and share his story to remember what can never be forgotten – to prevent such atrocities from ever happening again.

The sad reality that there will be only a few speakers left that could share these stories is heartbreaking. I love that CBSouth students had the opportunity to listen and learn from this man.

he spoke about how when what was going on in the world wasn’t directly affecting him, he didn’t speak up. but then how he wished he did when it began to take a direct toll on his life. we talked about this in my English class with Mr. Hepler, and how this mindset is such a broad idea that re occurs throughout history and into the modern day. it was really cool to here from someone who experienced an event that we all learn about for years on end! I was so grateful to have heard his story.
