Nicki Minaj, the self-proclaimed queen of rap, has recently found herself in her biggest controversy since her feud with Cardi B. The situation began when Nicki Minaj appeared at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest to speak on stage with Erika Kirk. However, this was no ordinary discussion – it directly addressed and supported right-wing politics and policies, something that contradicted what Minaj had spoken about in the past. This came as a major shock to her fanbase, particularly her queer audience. To fully understand this situation, let’s jump back into Minaj’s career.
Nicki Minaj came to the U.S. when she was five years old – illegally. She settled in Queens, New York, with her family, which is where she began her rapping career. Minaj performed at underground clubs and parties until she officially signed with Young Money Records in 2009. She released her first album, Pink Friday, in 2010, which immediately became a hit, peaking at number two on the US Billboard 200 album chart and selling 370,000 copies in its first week.
Nicki Minaj continued this success with songs like “Anaconda”, “Beez in the Trap”, and “Bang Bang”. She eventually earned three, number one hit songs, as well as 73 songs that reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. She became the 56th most streamed artist of all time, as well as the most streamed and successful female rapper of all time.
With these huge songs, Minaj became one of the most influential artists of her era. Her audience was mainly women and queer individuals, and Minaj catered to left-wing views. Minaj made posts such as the one seen below. In this post, she spoke against the government’s (Trump) deportations, directly tagging the America account and Trump himself.
Minaj stated, “I came to this country as an illegal immigrant… [America] please stop this. Can you try to imagine the terror & panic these kids feel” (from a now-deleted Facebook post).

In a completely separate instance, Minaj talked about having her own personal abor
tion and said, “It’d be contradictory if I said I wasn’t pro-choice.” These comments catered to her left-wing fanbase and alienated many right-wing individuals.
Through these comments and posts, Nicki Minaj set herself up to be a left-leaning celebrity and an icon among queer communities. Minaj built a brand around her comments and left-leaning persona. However, when an artist makes a dramatic shift away from their brand – severing the connection between them and their main audience – there is often major backlash; and that’s exactly what happened when Minaj declared herself “Trump’s number one fan.”
Nicki Minaj’s shift started when she began supporting right-wing figures. At first, this was minor, with Minaj feuding with the Democratic governor of California on X and reposting Donald Trump’s tweet that condemned the killing of Christians in Nigeria. What really angered her audience was when Minaj appeared at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest, an event focused on uniting MAGA youth in honor of the late Charlie Kirk. At this event, Erika Kirk (Charlie Kirk’s widow) introduced a surprise guest, Nicki Minaj. Minaj and Erika Kirk walked out to the song Super Bass, a queer anthem at a Maga event – widely considered anti-LGBTQ, causing instant backlash.

Then, Minaj sat down for a discussion with Erika Kirk, the most notable topics discussed being Minaj saying,
“Boys, be boys. It’s okay. Be boys. There’s nothing wrong with being a boy.”
Many people took this comment as anti-trans, which immediately caused backlash. To compound this, Minaj also praised Donald Trump and JD Vance. Minaj went as far as endorsing JD Vance for the 2028 U.S. elections and referring to him as an
“assassin.” This moment went viral, especially since Minaj made this comment only months after Erika’s husband, Charlie Kirk, was assassinated. After the slip, Minaj covered her mouth in an “oops” gesture as Erika Kirk said,
“There is nothing new under the sun that I have not heard” – making this one of the most confusing interactions of the night.
The backlash from this was instant and extreme. Minaj received hate comments by the dozens and even faced a petition calling for her deportation due to her hypocritical views. Fans felt betrayed by Minaj’s shift and wondered why she would make such a drastic change.
Fans theorized about the reason for this shift until early 2026, when Minaj made a series of public appearances and posts. First, Minaj appeared with Trump – in which they were holding hands (see below).

She then gave a speech where she called herself Trump’s number 1 fan, stating, “the hate for Trump actually motivates me to support him more.”
Right after this speech, Nicki Minaj posted a picture of her holding Trump’s gold card – a fast-track residency that provides her a track to U.S. citizenship (post shown below). This post gave clarity to many fans as to why she made such a dramatic shift – more for immigration benefits than for genuine beliefs.
Despite all the backlash, Minaj gained a lot from her actions. Along with securing residency status, Minaj gained a whole new audience of right-wing individuals who started listening to her music after AmericaFest. This led to a major spike in streaming for Minaj, surpassing Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B’s streams combined.
Although it looks like supporting the right has helped her career, I believe these decisions will come back to haunt her. Even with her new status, Nicki Minaj has lost much of her core fanbase. Her core fanbase was built over many years around her left-leaning ideals and empowering anthems for women and LGBTQ+ individuals alike. With her new right-wing audience, her music won’t have the same effect.
While many right-wing individuals may be listening to a few of her songs now – to support the new Republican-aligned celebrity – most of this audience won’t stay. Nicki Minaj’s anthems are made for her original core audience – right-leaning individuals won’t be as captivated by Super Bass or Starships. Her right-wing audience will likely get tired of her music and drift away overtime.
Once her right-wing audience fades, Minaj will be left with a gaping hole. Her core audience will be severely damaged, and her daily streams will be significantly lower. Without a major PR move to realign with the left, I believe Nicki Minaj’s career will fade and never reach the peak of her prior years – forcing her to relinquish her title as the queen of rap.
