The New iPhone

Apple has done it again. Introducing the new iPhone 5….S… and C?!

On September 10, Apple unveiled its next line of iPhones with not one, but two variations of the world’s most popular smartphone. CEO Tim Cook introduced the new cheaper model, the iPhone 5C, along with the long-anticipated iPhone 5S.

The iPhone 5S starts with a base price of $199, while the iPhone 5C starts at $99. Apple had hoped that the cheaper model would reach out to many consumers who have a slightly lower budget and to consumers in Asian markets. However, sales records over the past few weeks have shown that the iPhone 5C has yet to generate any significant revenue.

Instead, on the opening weekend, Apple stores were running out of stock of the iPhone 5S, proving that people were willing to pay just a little bit more to have a premium phone.

In terms of tech specs, the iPhone 5C has the exact same interior as the iPhone 5; it still has an A6 Dual Core chip, a 4 inch Retina Display, and 720p HD Facetime camera. However, it provides a much more colorful selection of choices. The iPhone 5C has a plastic back covering that comes in red, green, yellow, blue, and white.

On the other hand, with the iPhone 5S, Apple took several new steps. One significant difference is the new fingerprint sensor that is found on the home button. Users can now use Touch ID to sign into their iPhones. They can also use their fingerprint to make various purchases on the app store or iTunes. Another new introduction to the iPhone 5S is the gold covered back, adding to the previous color set of black and gray. The tech specs of the iPhone 5S are another step forward; it has a 64-bit A7 chip, along with an M7 motion co-processor that helps the phone become even more power efficient.

Another remarkable feature of the iPhone 5S is its improved camera. It still takes excellent pictures, on par with competing smartphone cameras like the Lumia 1020 and HTC One. Many have also reported that the new camera has improved greatly in low-lighting situations thanks to the new A7 processor chip.

In addition to the iPhone releases, Apple’s latest mobile operating system iOS 7 was made available to the public on September 20.

Many improvements of the iPhone lie in the interior of the phone for this year. Apple has developed a pattern of developing the “S” models every other year of their iPhone releases. One year is dedicated for a significant change to the iPhone line, the next, for interior improvements. For this year, the “most forward-thinking smartphone yet” is still relatively the same, but is now much faster in terms of specs. It’s a long way away, but it’ll be interesting to see what Apple has in store by next fall.
